March 15, 2011 is of great significance to the Syrian people.
It is the day they rose to take back what they had lost many years ago, their
freedom. The Syrian revolution began when residents of a small southern city,
Daraa, took to the streets to protest against the torture of students, all under 11 years of age,
who had put the word “freedom” on their school walls. The government’s
response, using heavy-handed force, led the protests to quickly spread across
much of the country. Now people are fighting for their life and freedom. Every
day people leave their house, saying goodbye to those whom they love because it
is not for sure that they will come back, and head out to rally for their
freedom. These civilians have no weapons and no way to defend themselves, but
they still go out because no one will help them. That is true courage, fighting
for what you believe in when no one will stand up for you. It has been two and
a half years since the revolution began. Many people have died for this cause,
but people have not lost hope and will remain fighting until they win because
these people are truly courageous fighters.
